Our family tends to contribute a measly offering by comparison. James makes bread to go with Susan’s pots of winter vegetable soup (bringing bannocks would spark discussion, nay controversy or disparagement). Martha makes some very, very good chocolate brownies that she stole from James, who stole them from someone else, probably.

One year, after much discussion, Drew and his daughter Lizzie decided to have a go at making ‘macon’, or mutton bacon. It is a mildly reestit piece of rolled mutton left for a few weeks, kept in the fridge and thinly sliced for frying. It was just about quite (verging towards very) good. However, perfection on preserving can be difficult to achieve, and it became clear that the brine and smoke hadn’t penetrated quite to the centre of the meat. After a while, the aroma was definitely telling us to stop eating. But the idea of mutton-bacon is still a good one – see my own attempt on Macon.

As for our current state of self-sufficiency? Well, when it comes to rhubarb and tatties, we’re good. Our freezer receives its annual bounty of a quarter cow and several lambs. We fish and one or two creel fishermen supply us with crabs and lobsters, mostly out of the generosity of their hearts.

But our crofting days are over.
